Small Group System

SMALL GROUP SYSTEM (Integrated Model)

1. Vision & Philosophy

Before launching anything, clearly define the purpose of your groups. Here’s an integrated vision statement based on Searcy + Orange/North Point:

Small groups exist to help people pursue relational discipleship, experience authentic community, and take next steps in following Jesus through intentional relationships.

Core Principles

  • Relationships first (Orange/North Point)

  • Easy, obvious, and strategic systems (Searcy)

  • Prioritize community over curriculum

  • Every believer belongs in a circle

  • Leaders are shepherds, not lecturers

  • Groups are temporary unless renewed intentionally (Searcy’s semester system)

  • Groups support weekend ministry, not compete with it (North Point)

2. Step-by-Step: Launching Small Groups

STEP 1 — Clarify the Why

  • Teach a 2–3 week sermon series on community.

  • Use stories from current relational discipleship wins.

  • Cast vision: “Circles are better than rows.”

Deliverables:

  • Vision document

  • Clear definition of “a win” for groups

  • Group expectations sheet (brief, simple, relational)

STEP 2 — Build the Infrastructure

Based on Searcy’s “system mindset,” define:

a. Director / Champion

  • Oversees systems, health, training, recruiting.

b. Coaches

  • Shepherd 6–8 group leaders.

  • Provide relational support, troubleshooting, training.

c. Leaders

  • Facilitate relationships.

  • Use prepared guides (no experts needed).

  • Create environments of care and growth.

d. Apprentices

  • Future leaders from within the group.

  • Orange principle: “Every leader develops another leader.”

STEP 3 — Determine the Model

Use a semester-based system from Searcy combined with relational continuity from Orange/North Point.

Semester Rhythm

  • Fall: 12–14 weeks

  • Spring: 10–12 weeks

  • Summer: Light groups, socials, or break

  • Clear start/stop = higher engagement, easier leadership onramps.

Group Types

  • Life-stage groups

  • Sermon-based groups (recommended for unified church direction)

  • Felt-need groups (marriage, financial, recovery)

  • Open community groups

STEP 4 — Recruit Leaders (The Searcy Way)

Funnel Strategy

  1. Teach on community (big ask).

  2. Announce need for hosts/leaders.

  3. Invite all people to an Interest Meeting.

  4. Interview + train potential leaders.

  5. Launch with simple curriculum.

Leader Requirements

  • Follower of Jesus

  • Attend group leader training

  • Agree to group values

  • Willing to shepherd, not teach

  • Have an apprentice by week 4–6

Note: Don’t over-vet. Searcy: “Don’t look for perfect people; look for willing people.

STEP 5 — Train Leaders

Initial Training (1.5 hours):

  • How to facilitate, not teach

  • How to lead discussions

  • How to care for group members

  • Conflict handling

  • How to reproduce yourself (apprentice model)

  • Clear expectations

Ongoing Training:

  • Monthly (or bi-monthly) touchpoints

  • Coach visits group at least once a semester

  • Leadership huddles twice per year

STEP 6 — Promote & Launch Groups

Promotion Channels

  • Sermon series on community

  • Groups Sunday / Lobby groups fair

  • Website + app directory

  • Social media testimonies

  • Email campaign

  • Personal invites (North Point: “A personal ask is the most effective ask.”)

Registration Strategy

  • Make signups fast, simple, and mobile-friendly.

  • Use filters (time, location, stage of life).

  • Automate confirmation + first meeting email.

STEP 7 — Group Meeting Blueprint

Opening Semester Meeting

  • Introduce yourselves

  • Share expectations/values

  • Talk about the purpose and rhythm of the group

  • Light discussion + relational warm-ups

  • Establish communication channel (GroupMe, text, email)

Weekly Flow (North Point model)

  1. Welcome (10 min) — relational check-in

  2. Win (10 min) — celebrate spiritual or personal steps

  3. Content (20–30 min) — sermon-based or selected curriculum

  4. Discussion (20–30 min) — real stories > right answers

  5. Prayer & Next Steps (10 min)

Orange principle:
You aren’t teaching curriculum—you’re leading people.

STEP 8 — Care Strategy

Create a system for meeting needs:

Care Pyramid

  1. Group members care first.

  2. Leader coordinates needs.

  3. Coach supports leader.

  4. Staff provides resources only when needed.

Use a care form or digital system for serious needs.

STEP 9 — Evaluate, Celebrate, Iterate

At the end of each semester:

Leader Survey

  • Wins

  • Challenges

  • Group dynamics

  • Care needs

Leader Celebration

  • Thank-you event or dinner

  • Highlight stories from groups

  • Give a small gift

Iterate

Improve:

  • Registration flow

  • Training modules

  • Group materials

  • Leadership pipeline

Integrating Nelson Searcy’s Framework

His 8 Key Small-Group Systems:

  1. Leader recruitment

  2. Leader training

  3. Leader care

  4. Group promotion

  5. Group connection/placement

  6. Group curriculum

  7. Group events

  8. Group assimilation

Your system integrates these by:

  • Using semester-based recruitment/training cycles.

  • Creating consistent leader and coach structures.

  • Making groups easy to join and easy to leave.

  • Leveraging events (Group Launch Sundays, Midyear Rally).

  • Ensuring semester on-ramps for newcomers.

Integrating Orange / North Point Model Insights

1. Community is the Goal

Groups help people find a “tribe,” not complete a curriculum.

2. Leaders are Pastors / Shepherds

  • Relationships matter more than teaching expertise.

  • Presence > performance.

3. Creative On-Ramps

  • GroupLink-style events

  • Relational environments first, content second

4. Reproducibility Through Apprentices

  • Every leader finds a future leader.

  • Leaders grow leaders.

5. Milestones and Next Steps

Faith formation happens through experiences, not just lessons.
